Grants to individuals
If you’re an individual athlete seeking additional funding to achieve your goals, then Sport Newcastle can help. It’s what we’re here for and we meet three times a year to distribute money where it’s needed most.
Once you’ve decided which grant to apply for (please refer to the Performance Awards Pathway section for guidance) your application should go through your club. The form for individual grants needs to be completed by your club and must include a reference from a club official (who should not be related to the applicant). It’s essential that every section of the application form is completed before we can make an award.
Criteria for grants to individuals
We can support you with funding to cover:
- Travelling expenses
- Clothing and equipment
- Coaching and instruction
To qualify for a grant you should be:
- Aged 11-23.
- A member of a recognised sports club in Tyne & Wear or live in this metropolitan district.
- Prepared to take part in any publicity (social media/newspaper article etc.) associated with your award.
There are no age restrictions if you are applying for funding to support coaching awards or qualifications. Please refer to the Grants to Clubs/Organisations section.
Performance Awards Pathway
When awarding grants the committee must balance a range of factors including:
- Funds available
- Age of applicant (where they are on their sporting career)
- Whether the applicant has received a grant previously
- Whether the grant will assist the applicant taking the next steps in fulfilling their potential
- Will the grant benefit the club as well as the individual
- Number of applications per club
- Sport England-approved sport status
Our tiered performance pathway has been designed to help you determine what level of grant you should realistically apply for.
Bronze
This would typically be the entry point for first-time applicants. A maximum grant of £250 to support young athletes progressing at county level and above.
Silver
A maximum grant of £500 to support athletes competing at national level and enjoying sustained success at regional/county level. Sport Newcastle Rising Stars can enter the pathway at this level.
Gold
A maximum grant of £1,000 to recognise outstanding potential and progress at international level.
Platinum
Supports world class athletes selected by Sport Newcastle as Sports Scholars. £1,500 per year for a maximum of three years (reviewed annually).
